Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
