Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
